y-u s-u-c-k

After five years, I'm finally starting to follow a conversation in Korean. I probably would have learned a lot more by now if I were more interested in the topics of conversation I usually sit through.

Last weekend, with EunBong's friends, I spent most of the time focussed on Fina, while EunBong enjoyed her time. I didn't pay much attention to their talking until her friend's date started talking about his time in America. I'd already gathered they were talking about embarrassing names when EunBong started listing all the names she had mentioned for Fina, before we settled. What really caught my attention was when he started talking about being pulled over for speeding once, and the policeman took one look at his license then said, "You gotta be kidding me?"

I asked what his Korean name was (he'd introduced himself with an English name) and he spelled it out, "Y-U  S-U-C-K," then added, "Imagine going through high school in the States with that name!"

The only thing that came to mind was a certain other name, which I've had more then a few students go by. I looked back at him and said, "Well, it could have been worse... Your name could have been Bum Suck!"

He promptly agreed.

  1. Reminds me of my favourite Vietnamese grocery store... Man Phouc... and the genteel ways to ask hubby to pick up groceries there...
