Swallowing my Mara
What happens when I let my guard down, I start listening to Mara when he tells me, "That person insulted you, disrespected you, that give you the right to give it back."
My mind immediately begins reasoning, fabricating ways to excuse myself for retaliating. I've been noticing this a lot more since moving to the country side, where people have had less exposure to foreigners and can't resist commenting something when they see one.
Though Mara's advice is always instantly gratifying, he's only out to please himself. But when I manage to listen the Buddha's words, like a faint echo, trickling out from the Dharma hall of my mind, the results are fundamentally better, peaceful, happy.
Lately, I've been hearing the words but not listening. It's time I swallow my pride and choose to be happy... We'll see how it goes!
