Monday Morning Blues; I Gave My Love A Cherry

Doc Watson I Gave My Love A Cherry

Any time I listen to Doc Watson, I'm immediately swept back to my childhood, listening to the tape deck in my dad's old red '77 Ford pickup, driving down the backroads of Yarmouth to shoe horses.

The night our new baby was born, I sang this song in my dream, suddenly realizing what a beautiful lullaby it made. When I woke up, I couldn't remember what the song was I'd been singing in my sleep, but holding Cello in the hospital, looking at his beautiful little sleeping face, I suddenly started singing it to him again.

I Gave My Love A Cherry

I gave my love a cherry
That had no stone
I gave my love a chicken
That had no bone
I gave my love a baby
With no crying.
And told my love a story
That had no end

How can there be a cherry
That has no stone?
How can there be a chicken
That has no bone?
How can there be a baby
With no crying?
How can there be a story
That has no end?

A cherry when it's blooming
It has no stone
A chicken when it's pippin'
There is no bone
A baby when it's sleeping
There's no crying.
And when I say, 'I love you"
It has no end

I gave my love a cherry
That had no stone
I gave my love a chicken
That had no bone
I gave my love a baby
With no crying.
And told my love a story
That had no end
