The Fifth Precept (visited through The Kids In the Hall)

I vow to abstain from intoxicants, taken to induce heedlessness.





Commentary:

When one considers the amount of effort required to build mindfulness and clarity, it's as good a reason as any not to take something counterproductive to that effort.

For this reason, breaking the fifth precept, reducing mindfulness, blurring clarity, can be seen as a gateway to breaking the other four.
